DOG'S NAME:  Autumn

SEX: Female

AGE: 2

RESCUE:  Safe Harbor Animal Rescue

BREED:  Lab/Golden Mix

COLOR: Golden

WEIGHT: 40 lbs.

KIDS:  Not under 5

DOGS: Yes

CATS: Yes

HOW I CAME TO THE SHELTER:  Autumn was a street dog, well known to local businesses, the rescue community, and a local trailer park. She was loved by all and had a daily routine down as to which chicken joint she like the best and which porch she preferred to sleep upon. She lived for months on the edge of a busy highway and busy shopping districts with great amount of traffic. Autumn survived the streets and avoided conflict with the other strays. She cuddled with an elderly couple on their porch every evening. Her issue was a terror of leashes. Many tried all different techniques to leash her. It took animal control trapping her to bring her to safety. From there she went to live with one of ATLs top trainers to learn that leashes are friends. It took 3 weeks. Now she marches proudly on walks and enjoys group training classes.

THINGS I LIKE AND DISLIKE:  Autumn loves consistent non-stressful structured environments. She is a gentle sweet spirit who loves affection. She will need a quiet slow approach and time for decompression. She doesn't like loud noises and high energy environments. Although Autumn loves to meet new people, the approach should be quiet and people should let her come to them. She is affectionate and typically takes minutes for her to greet and wag her tail. She should be considered a flight risk as she startles easily but does become more comfortable weekly. Getting in and out of cars her leash should be firmly grasped and her family should be vigilant on the possibility of "door darting" as would be the same with any new dog.

UPDATE ON AUTUMN:  Autumn has gone back to Georgia with her rescue and is currently working with a trainer on being more comfortable and not darting out doors.  Autumn is still very much available for adoption and can come back up if interested.  This would be a firm commitment though as currently there is no foster available in CT for Autumn.

DOG'S NAME:  Big Boy

SEX: Male

AGE: 3-4

RESCUE:  Safe Harbor Animal Rescue

BREED:  Golden Mix

COLOR: Golden

WEIGHT: 40 lbs.

KIDS:  Over 12 only

DOGS: Selective

CATS: Yes

HOW I CAME TO THE SHELTER:  Big Boy was let out of a car, abandoned at a busy traffic intersection. Locating him and ensuring his safety was a 6 week endeavor, involving 1000's of flyers, mailers, yard signs, and many kind people canvassing forests, shopping centers, and neighborhoods night and day. He was often rejected when he came to doors and fences, asking for help. As time went on, Big Boy became frightened and went into "flight mode" making picking him up more difficult. He was caught when he ran into a fenced in yard through an open gate. The moment Big Boy had a leash around him he was all kisses and love. He has re-adjusted VERY well to living in a home again. He is perfectly housebroken and has beautiful manners.

THINGS I LIKE AND DISLIKE:  Big Boy LOVES leash walks and to hang out with human friends. He prefers a quiet home environment with consistency. Big Boy is affectionate, sensitive, and incredibly sweet. Big Boy likes to run free in the neighborhood as he used to do with his previous home, however that should absolutely not be allowed and precautions on "door darting" should be made. Also, he does not like reactive or aggressive dogs pestering him on walks. UPS and other types of delivery people/vans are a cause for suspicion for him.

UPDATE ON Big Boy:  Big Boy has also gone back to Georgia with his rescue and is currently working with a trainer on being more comfortable and not darting out doors.  Big Boy is still very much available for adoption and can come back up if interested.  This would be a firm commitment though as currently there is no foster available in CT for Big Boy.

DOG'S NAME:  Fritz

SEX: Male

AGE: 7

RESCUE:  Safe Harbor Animal Rescue

BREED:  Pomeranian

COLOR: Black

WEIGHT: 8 lbs.

KIDS:  Not Tested

DOGS: Yes

CATS: Not Tested

HOW I CAME TO THE SHELTER:  Fritz's family dropped him at the vet stating they no longer wanted him after 7 yrs. The vet kept him for a week before seeking rescue- they loved him.

THINGS I LIKE AND DISLIKE:  Fritz is social and like to be part of action. He is bright, joyful and energetic. He loves laps and affection.

Fritz needs a quiet home with structure and a family that will provide training and guidance. He becomes anxious when there are changes in his environment or if he is left alone for long periods. He needs a family who understands him and will give him time to decompress and acclimate to his new environment. It took close to a month at his foster home for Fritz to become comfortable, after all, the only family he knew dumped him and the breeder wouldn't take him back.

DOG'S NAME:  Harlow

SEX: Female

AGE: 1

RESCUE:  Halfway Home Rescue Inc.

BREED:  Akita

COLOR: Tan/black

WEIGHT: 70 lbs.

KIDS:  No

DOGS: No

CATS: No

HOW I CAME TO THE SHELTER:  Harlow came to our shelter from a really bad situation. She had spent her life on the end of a chain surrounded by dogs used for fighting- likely being assaulted on a regular basis.

THINGS I LIKE AND DISLIKE:  Harlow was only 6 months old when rescued and had never felt the touch of a kind human. With help from some very dedicated volunteers and a team of dedicated trainers, Harlow is making incredible progress. She is incredibly smart and a very quick learner. Because of her abusive past, Harlow needs an adult home (with Akita or like breed experience) that will be sure she gets plenty of positive reinforcement, professional training, and exercise. Harlow must be the only pet in her home as her tough beginning has caused her to be too reactive to share a home with other pets. Harlow's new home MUST be willing to continue her professional training.

HEALTH: Harlow is spayed; vaccinated for rabies, distemper, and bordetella; and microchipped with a lifetime registration. She tested negative for heart worm and is current on flea/tick and heart worm prevention.

Harlow is in CT and available for adoption.  To apply for HARLOW please CLICK HERE

HOW I CAME TO THE SHELTER:  Josie came from Georgia with her puppy, who has already been adopted.

THINGS I LIKE AND DISLIKE:  Josie would prefer to be the only dog in the house. She loves the one on one attention. Josie needs a family who is willing to work on her manners, as her worst habit is jumping on people in excitement. She is housebroken and crate trained. Josie isn’t great at sharing with friends, but she absolutely loves to play with her toys and loves the water!

DOG'S NAME:  Lollipop

AGE: 9

RESCUE:  Halfway Home Rescue Inc.

BREED:  Australian Cattle Dog

COLOR: Blue/white

WEIGHT: 45 lbs.

KIDS:  Yes

DOGS: Yes

CATS: Not Tested

HOW I CAME TO THE SHELTER: Lolly was adopted from a shelter nine years ago, and lived with the same family before being surrendered to rescue.

THINGS I LIKE AND DISLIKE:  Lollipop is looking for a caring and compassionate person who loves her breed and the personality of a cattle dog. They are amazing companions! Lollipop's new home will need to be committed to managing her diabetes (giving insulin twice daily and feeding a carb controlled or prescription diet) as well as being able to afford her care. Lolly is the sweetest thing and she's worth it!

HEALTH:  Lolly was recently diagnosed as diabetic and because she was left untreated for so long, Lolly's eyesight has suffered and she is mostly blind. Fortunately, she gets around just fine! She is spayed, vaccinated, and tested negative for heart worm. She is current on flea/tick and heart worm prevention.

Lollipop is in CT and available for adoption.  To apply for LOLLIPOP please CLICK HERE

HOW I CAME TO THE SHELTER:  Manny was pulled from a local high kill animal shelter just in time, it was just too hard to resist those ears and sweet face.

THINGS I LIKE AND DISLIKE:  Manny has a huge, loving personality for such a little guy. He's a fun loving dog that makes friends wherever he goes, and gives wonderful kisses. He's sweet and gentle, and very mellow. His favorite thing to do is snuggle. Manny cannot go to a home with kitties though, he just loves to chase them way too much!

AGE: 7

RESCUE:  Safe Harbor Animal Rescue

BREED:  Terrier/Shih Tzu Mix

COLOR: Tan/white

WEIGHT: 23 lbs.

KIDS:  Yes

DOGS: Yes

HOW I CAME TO THE SHELTER:  Maurice was found dumped roadside severely vision impaired, matted, and starving. He was brought into a local high intake/kill shelter amongst 200 other dogs. He was a shelter favorite among staff and volunteers. Maurice's sweet patient spirit shone in spite of his horrible condition and predicament.

THINGS I LIKE AND DISLIKE: Maurice loves to explore and be a part of doggie and human social gatherings. Maurice can be with any dog group and all love him due to his gentle nature and easy going attitude. Maurice likes to feel included and doesn't like to be alone for long periods.

HEALTH ISSUES:  Maurice is vision impaired. He can distinguish between light and dark and has no issues getting around in his environment. He is slow, steady, and cautious. Within a day, Maurice knew the yard at his foster home and learned to "knock" on the back door when he was ready to come in.

AGE: 9

RESCUE:  Nuts4Mutts

BREED:  Toy Poodle

COLOR: White

WEIGHT: 8 lbs.

KIDS:  No

DOGS: Yes

CATS: Not Tested

HOW I CAME TO THE SHELTER:  Maxwell lived a charmed life and was purchased from a breeder with his brother. They were spoiled and taken very well care of. Sadly, their owners got older and had to move somewhere that didn't allow dogs.

THINGS I LIKE AND DISLIKE: Maxwell doesn't really like to be called a senior, because he still feels pretty young and has a lot of pep in his step! He likes going for walks and loves to run around his foster family's fenced in yard with friends. Maxwell likes everyone, dogs and humans alike! He can be a bit stubborn, as poodles are, but he is also very loving & friendly.

Maxwell is in CT and available for adoption. To apply for MAXWELL please CLICK HERE

DOG'S NAME:  Moe

COLOR: Orange

WEIGHT: 10 lbs.

KIDS:  Not Under 5

DOGS: Yes

HOW I CAME TO THE SHELTER:  Moe was hit by a car and had horrible injuries. He was so brave and sweet in spite of his pain. He had severe lacerations on his tongue, lip and gum line, all requiring stitches. Surgical repairs were highly successful.

THINGS I LIKE AND DISLIKE:  Moe LOVES food (it must be measured). He is curious, bright, and interested in his surroundings. He does well in groups of dogs, which consists of 2 vision impaired and 3 other fun ones. He doesn't enjoy young pups jumping on his head. Moe is very quiet and will need time to decompress in his new environment.

HEALTH ISSUES: Moe's injuries from the car accident include losing the majority of his teeth. Due to that, he eats dry kibble soaked in water without an issue.

RESCUE:  Halfway Home Rescue Inc.

BREED:  Herding Dog Mix

COLOR: Black/white

WEIGHT: 55 lbs.

KIDS:  No

DOGS: Not at this time

CATS: No

HOW I CAME TO THE SHELTER: Scooter came to our shelter by way of our friends at Peach County Animal Rescue in Georgia. Before that, Scooter was picked up by animal control in a rough area of Macon, Georgia where children were screaming and throwing rocks at him.

THINGS I LIKE AND DISLIKE: Scooter is incredibly smart. He is a quick learner and is very loyal to those he trusts. Because of his abusive past, Scooter needs an adult home that will be sure he gets plenty of positive reinforcement, training, and exercise. Scooter would be a fantastic running and/or hiking partner. He plays well with other dogs at our shelter and could learn a lot from a well balanced canine companion. Scooter has had professional training and is doing beautifully. He is still attending classes and has really blossomed into a fabulous dog- for the right home that will continue training and working him. Scooter LOVES having a job!

HEALTH: Scooter is neutered; vaccinated for rabies, distemper, and bordetella; and microchipped with a lifetime registration. He tested negative for heart worm and tick borne diseases and is current on flea/tick and heart worm prevention.

THINGS I LIKE AND DISLIKE: Serena is a sweet but shy love bug! She is a smart girl (typical of heeler mixes), walks great on a leash, and rides well in the car. Serena would be best suited for an adult home with herding breed experience. Serena gets along with other dogs her size. She needs a home without cats or tiny dogs. Serena is nervous when first meeting most men, but a few cookies and some extra attention will help her to warm up.
